The most colourful and vibrant celebration of the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2019, held from 28 September-7 October, is also coinciding with the Nine Emperor Gods Festival.

In accordance with tradition, many religious devotees will strictly adhere to a strict vegetarian diet to ensure purification of the mind and body. The spectacular displays of awe-inspiring religious rituals such as walking on fire, impaling of body parts in a carnival-like atmosphere are believed to offer veneration for their gods and ancestors.
