Venue: Paknam City and Phra Samut Chedi in Samut Prakan

Every year, five days after the full moon in October and the end of Buddhist Lent, local people in Samut Prakan come together to pay respect to Phra Samut Chedi by wrapping a new red cloth around the stupa. This year, the ceremony is on Monday 29th October 2018. This event heralds the start of the twelve-day temple fair which lasts until 9th November. This is the oldest and longest running temple fair in Thailand. It is also one of the biggest. The fair takes place on both sides of the river around Phra Samut Chedi and in Paknam town. There is a mixture of fairground rides, OTOP products and a lot to eat. The best time to arrive if you don’t like crowds is 5pm when the main roads through Paknam close and the size of the fair is then doubled. It is open during the day but there is more to do in the evenings. But, be warned, it can get very crowded after about 7pm.

The red cloth parade will start at 8:00am on Monday 29th October 2018 in front of the provincial hall in Samut Prakan (map). The red cloth is then paraded around Paknam ending up where it started by the river. It is then put on a small motor boat and taken upriver to Phra Pradaeng where there is a second parade. After lunch, it is then brought back to Paknam for the main ceremony at 2:00 pm at Phra Samut Chedi. This is on the opposite side of the river to the provincial hall (map). You can catch a ferry boat across from the market. At the temple, the red cloth is unfolded and then carried around the complex three times in a clockwise direction. Finally, it is taken up a rickety ladder where it is wrapped around the stupa. On Thursday 1st November, there will be a candlelight ceremony at the temple from 6:00 pm.
