The archeological site of Ban Chiang, together with its surrounding area, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992. In celebration of this significant declaration, the Udon Thani province has been organising the spectacular “Ban Chiang World Heritage Festival” every year with an objective of showcasing a fascinating introduction to the rich history of this forgotten culture.
The highlights of the three-day festival will be the chance to marvel at the archaeological discoveries, dating back to the Bronze Age or over 5,000 years ago. The artifacts can be seen for free both at the Ban Chiang National Museum and the fascinating site of the Pho Si Nai archaeological site.
Cultural shows both on stage and within the festival’s grounds are scheduled to fill the events with fun and educational experiences of the unique Isan culture, including folk dancing and exhilarating Thai Boxing matches. There will also be concerts of Isan folk music shows (Mo Lam), boat racing, cooking competitions, a Pong Lang musical show, a light and sound presentation, and many more.
Throughout three days, visitors can dig around the shops for local products, taste the local food, and even emulate the Bronze Age ancestors by attempting to make some Ban Chiang pottery.
