Battery packs of over 17m Fujitsu laptops pose fire risk

Fujitsu said on Wednesday battery packs used in about 17.12 million of its laptop computers may be at risk of catching fire, urging consumers to update software to deal with the problem.

The defect can affect 580 models, or almost all marketed between 2010 and 2016, the Japanese electronics maker said. The software update to prevent ignition by suppressing rising voltage will be available via Microsoft in early November.

At least 45 incidents of batteries catching fire have been confirmed so far, with no injuries reported, according to Fujitsu.

Fujitsu has announced recalls and replacements of certain laptop battery packs in the past, but this time it discovered other models also pose a risk.
